An improperly aligned temporomandibular joint can have farther-reaching effects than the obvious conditions such as jaw pain and dental wear and tear.
One common and debilitating effect of temporomandibular joint disorder , also known as TMJ or TMD, is migraine headaches. When the jaw is misaligned, it can cause excess pressure on the blood vessels to the brain, causing vascular, or migraine, headaches. In addition, the TMJ is put under perpetual stress and strain as it tries to correct the misalignment, and the constant tension exacerbates headache pains.
TMD causes the muscles of the head and neck to be in a constant state of over-contraction. This contraction can stimulate a migraine trigger point near the eyes, resulting in a migraine headache.
Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ / TMD) is indicated a distinct possibility you suffer from unexplained migraine headaches, either alone or in combination with any of the following symptoms:
- Clicking or popping of the jaw
- Pain and a ‘tired’ feeling in the area
- Tooth grinding
- Neck and back pain
- Restricted range of motion of the jaw
