Sedation Dentistry

Florida: Jacksonville Beach, Ponte Vedra Beach

Florida Sleep DentistNearly everyone suffers from some degree of anxiety when visiting the dentist, but for some, the anxiety can be so pronounced that they forgo dental appointments entirely, letting their oral health decline in the process. Whether the cause of patient’s anxiety is fear of dentists themselves, fear of needles, previous bad experiences with dentistry, or because their teeth are sensitive and dental work is unusually painful, Dr. Williams’ goal is to make the process as relaxing and stress-free as possible.

Dr. Williams is sympathetic to the concerns of anxious patients, and provides services and procedures that allow even very nervous or fearful patients to receive the dental care they both need and want, to maintain their oral health and to maintain a happy, healthy smile for life.

An important element of Dr. Williams’ treatment for anxious patients is sedation dentistry.

Sedation dentistry can be an ideal option for patients with any of the following:

  • Anxiety
  • Fear of dentists
  • Fear of needles
  • Sensitive gag reflex
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Several procedures that must be completed in a single appointment

Also referred to as conscious sedation dentistry, sedation dentistry is designed to maximize the comfort level and minimize the stress involved in having dental work performed, while maintaining consciousness.

The sedation dentistry process begins before the appointment. You will be asked to arrange for a companion to help you get to and from your appointment, and to stay with you until the sedation wears off after your appointment. Dr. Williams will prescribe a sedative to take the night before your appointment, to ensure that you arrive calm and well rested, but drowsy.

When you do arrive for your appointment, you will be administered nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, a safe but powerful sedative that will relieve your anxiety and keep you in what is known as a ‘twilight state’—a condition in which you are technically conscious, but relaxed, pain free, and calm, throughout the procedure.

For most patients, conscious sedation dentistry is sufficient to keep them calm, relaxed, and pain free throughout any procedures they require. In fact, many sedation dentistry patients report that they don’t even remember the procedure following conscious sedation dentistry.

Dr. Williams is available for consultation with nervous patients, and will be happy to fully describe the procedures and answer any questions you may have with sympathy and understanding.
