Snoring and Sleep Apnea
Florida: Jacksonville Beach, Ponte Vedra Beach
Snoring isn't just an annoyance. Sometimes, it’s a warning that there’s something wrong.
Snoring is a frequent symptom of breathing problems such as sleep apnea, a condition in which the snorer is getting insufficient oxygen during the sleep cycle. So not only can snoring disrupt the sleep of the snorer and his or her sleeping partner, but it may indicate that the brain is oxygen deprived, which can cause brain cells to die off more rapidly.
The conditions that cause snoring can also cause any of a number of other symptoms, including the following:
- Teeth grinding (also called bruxism)
- Memory loss
- Fatigue
- Anxiety
- Headaches
- Depression
- Cardiovascular problems
Dentistry and snoring
What does all this have to do with dentistry? The most commonly prescribed treatment for sleep apnea is use of a simple dental appliance that fits into your mouth and prevents snoring by preventing the tissues of the throat from collapsing during sleep and keeping the airway from becoming obstructed.
If you have snoring or sleep apnea problems, Dr. Williams may be able to fit you with a simple, inexpensive dental appliance to treat the problem.
