Gum Treatment - Cosmetic Dentistry

Florida: Jacksonville Beach, Ponte Vedra Beach

After cavities, gum disease is the most common cause of dental problems. A common condition, gum disease is also responsible for tooth loss, loose teeth, bleeding gums, bad breath, soreness, and changes to your bite and the alignment of the temporomandibular joint.

Gum treatment, also referred to as periodontal treatment, can consist of various procedures for preventing and correcting gum disease. Depending on the type and severity of the condition, treatment for gum disease might include the following.

Preventing gum disease

The ideal solution to gum disease is, of course, prevention. With proper dental hygiene and regular dentist visits, most patients can maintain their gum health throughout their lives. Dr. Williams emphasizes proper education and early intervention into gum disease, and will provide you with a thorough examination of your gums, so you can avoid problems before they arise and progress.

Scaling and root planing

Scaling and root planing is a treatment for gum disease that consists of procedures to clean accumulated tartar and plaque from the root of the tooth under the gum, and planing the area to prevent further buildup.

Gum surgery

Gum surgery is required for some more advanced types of gum disease. This procedure involves lifting the gum away from the tooth, allowing the dentist greater access to the root of the tooth, and allowing the dentist to remove plaque and tartar further up along the tooth.

Bone grafting

In some severe cases, bone grafts may be required to replace bone loss due to the gum disease. This can be done using either natural bone from a donor site elsewhere on the patient’s body, or a synthetic material.
